# Tagging system

Already available in the `Datalake` as detailed [here](https://documentation.picsellia.com/docs/datalake-tagging-system), the `DatasetVersion` also embeds its own dedicated tagging system.

## 1. Introducing `AssetTag` by Picsellia

A *tag* is an object you can name and attach to one or more Picsellia objects, mainly to structure and easily retrieve them among others. As there are tagging systems related to different objects on Picsellia (`Datalake`, `DatasetVersion`, ...), any tag related to a `DatasetVersion` is called an `AssetTag`.

Any `Asset` can have as many `AssetTag` attached to it as you need.

This additional level of abstraction lets you build your own `Asset` structure inside your `DatasetVersion`, so you can retrieve and browse `Asset` by searching for the ones having one or several `AssetTag` attached.

It is important to note that each `DatasetVersion` has its own independent tagging system: an `AssetTag` created in one `DatasetVersion` is not shared with its other `DatasetVersion`, nor with the `DataTag` of the underlying `Datalake`.

  ### An `AssetTag` is not a `Label` or an `Annotation`

  It's only a tool to help you organize your `Asset` in Picsellia.
</Callout>

You are free to use `AssetTag` however you want, to organize your `DatasetVersion` the way that suits you. For example, a common use of `AssetTag` is to materialize a split of the `DatasetVersion` (e.g. *train*/*test*/*val*), independently of the `Version Type` and `Labelmap` covered [here](https://documentation.picsellia.com/docs/dataset-set-up-the-dataset).

  ### `AssetTag` are powerful

  You can use the [Query Language](https://documentation.picsellia.com/docs/dataset-query-language) to retrieve or filter your `Asset` using `AssetTag`. For Computer Vision teams, this is what makes a _train_/_test_/_val_ split (or any other `AssetTag`-based segmentation) directly actionable: querying on an `AssetTag` reliably returns the same subset of `Asset` every time, which a `Training` or an `Evaluation` can then rely on.
</Callout>

## 2. Creating, Editing, and Deleting `AssetTag`

For creating, modifying, or removing an `AssetTag`, you can access the *Settings* of your `DatasetVersion` and go to the *Asset Tags* page.

To create a new `AssetTag`, simply click on *+ Add new asset tag*. This adds a new entry to the `AssetTag` list, where you can provide a name and description for the new `AssetTag`.

You can also change the name and description of an existing `AssetTag`, or delete it using the *trash icon* after selecting it.

## 3. Attach `AssetTag` to your `Asset`

Tagging your `Asset` is quite easy: from the *Assets overview*, select the `Asset` to be tagged and click on *Tag > Attach*.

<Image src="https://files.readme.io/2983b9293399b53844dd56acfce1350e57146a71a69cfa885a4de5504955c620-image.png" align="center" caption="Attach AssetTag to selected Asset" />

Then choose the `AssetTag` to attach to the selected `Asset` from the list of existing `AssetTag`, and click on *Attach*.

You can also create a new `AssetTag` that will be attached directly to the selected `Asset`, from that same attachment modal.

## 4. Visualize `AssetTag` on your `Asset`

Now that you know how to create and attach `AssetTag` to structure and organize your `DatasetVersion`, let's see how to leverage them to easily access the `Asset` you need.

You can visualize the `AssetTag` attached to each `Asset` from the *Table view* (in its own *asset tags* column) or the *Details view* (in a *Tags* field).

<Image src="https://files.readme.io/869ca17f2cd8095b229674ca630d29fd56a31df134e1e5d08d40fe3d61d58e81-image.png" align="center" caption="AssetTag in Table view" border={true} />

<Callout icon="📘" theme="info">
  ### The `DataTag` of the underlying `Data` are also visible

  From the _Details view_, you can also see the `DataTag` attached to the `Data` linked to the displayed `Asset`, in a separate _Data Tags_ field. `AssetTag` and `DataTag` are independent: attaching or detaching one never affects the other.
</Callout>

By using the search bar, you can also filter to only the `Asset` with one or several given `AssetTag` attached.

</Callout>

## 5. Detach `AssetTag`

If you need to detach one or several `AssetTag` from a batch of `Asset` in your `DatasetVersion`, select the `Asset` the `AssetTag` need to be detached from and click on *Tag > Detach*.

<Image src="https://files.readme.io/931b265a78246484ffcf33fcbe1e5ef724a1819942c14a22579690b580fcbf8b-image.png" align="center" caption="Detach AssetTag menu access" border={true} />

A modal opens, listing all `AssetTag` attached to any of the selected `Asset`. Click on the `AssetTag` you want to detach from the selected `Asset`, then click on the *Detach* button.
